This is a 5th grade math problem. If you can't stand math word problems, just delete now. If you can open the spreadsheet, you'll see it's a very small list of people who have gotten the correct number. This is not a trick question. This is a real math problem so don't say that a bus has no legs. Read carefully.


There are 7 girls in a bus

Each girl has 7 backpacks

In each backpack, there are 7 big cats

For every big cat there are 7 little cats

Question: How many legs are there in the bus?

I got it after 3 attempts.

I suppose it helps if you read the question carefully. I guess the problem is that your brain reads what it wants to read without actually noting what the actual question says.

Remember the paper that said "Read through all this paper first and then begin at question one" Most people just read question one and answer it, then two and answer it etc. But at the bottom of the page it says "only answer questions 1 and 2 then hand your paper in" Most of the people work right the way through the paper (15 or whatever questions) and run out of time, then start complaining there wasn't enough time.

If they'd have done what they were supposed to do, i.e. read it all first, then they'd have finished quickly.

Similar to the legs on a bus question. If we read what it says then we'd get it right, but we tend to read what we think it says!!!
