Do you ever struggle with trying to please God and what you think His
expectations of you are? Then when you fall short, you get into condemnation and
think that God is mad at you?
I told my mother about
these thoughts, and I said, "I feel like I'm letting the Lord down." I'll never
forget her answer. She said, " .......do you talk to me every day?" I answered,
"No, not every day." She said, "Do you think I'm mad at you because we don't
talk every day?" I said, "No. We have a relationship. We know we love each other
even if we don't talk every day." "It's the same way with the Lord," she
explained. "You have a relationship with Him, and He knows there are times when
you don't feel your best. He understands, and He loves you anyway. God's not mad
at you. .........."
That explanation set me free from self-condemnation and
the bondage of legalism. It doesn't give us permission to be slack or to neglect
our time with the Lord, but God doesn't expect us to be perfect or superhuman.
Psalm 103:13-14 NKJV says, As a father pities his children, So the Lord pities
those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. God
understands our frailties, and He loves us anyway.
