| Hey all, I debated where to throw this thread but figured general discussion was the safest place.
As some of you know I play the sax (hence my display name) and also some guitar, piano and flute on the side. I play with a few different groups of people from time to time outside of school and have no problem throwing together a few jazz charts. Something I've always thought would be really cool though, is to go for a rock or fushion band approach so that I will have a chance to play the instrument im intending to further study with different and maybe more intense style of music.
My only problem with the rock/fushion idea is that most of my friends that have made up 'garage bands' don't really have room in their music both original stuff and covers to throw in a horn part. Alldat, I know you have some skill for sure with mission of one so I'm curious if you or anyone else here has ever attempted adding horns to their rock music and how they went about doing it? I can always do a background sort of thing playing the tonic of the chords but thats not all that exciting or practical, so if you have any thoughts whatsoever as to how to make a rockin sax part pardon the pun for a rock group I'd love to hear them.
Beth. |

| I can't see that adding a sax part would be that difficult. You could do a rockin' sax lead on some songs, or use it to add layers to the rhythm parts. I would think that it would just be a matter of deciding what you wanted to do with the instrument in your recordings or live performance. _________________ I might have decided, or maybe not, that I should or shouldn't, depending on the issue or non-issue, to possibly share or not share, any thoughts, opinions, or facts (that might not be deemed factual by some), due to possible fear of any misinterpretation or retribution. |

| Several rock (and even metal) bands have sucessfully incorporated sax into their music and kept it rockin. Just not Kenny G. _________________ "I used to be indecisive.......... Now I'm not sure."

| The youth praise band my son plays in has incorporated sax and flute into their sets in the past along with heavy guitars. It's not something I would necessarily want a steady diet of, but it really came off well when they did it. |

| Yeah actually come to think of it I've heard some really good rock bands with a few horns thrown, it's just really a how to? thing for me... like it's not a melody instrument in most rock band cases but it's also not exactly supporting either. With a bari I could probably get away with just playing chord tones but that would sound really odd on my tenor or soprano. but I guess technically if I actually try and experiment with it instead of sitting here typing about it I could come up with some good results eh? And Staybrite there will be no messing with Kenny G. .... he's like... like the Chuck Norris of jazz, only so not ... infact, guinness book of world records, longest note ever held 45 minutes by Kenny G..... I think he's secretly a passionate metal musician. |

| Wellll, if you want to get really theoretical Chuck Norris is always at the head of on T.V. people "burns" and Kenny G somehow manages to be at the head of most jazz "burns" (You and my band teacher are clearly on the same page) so in analyzing the um psychological impact of both human figures on our own minds which strive to make connections in the world we live in so that we can make sense of thing we can conclude that there is a similarity when one is making a "burn". ... now if I could only spin stuff like that for my essays when school is actually in huh? |

| Let me clarify the Chuck Norris/Kenny G debate... Chucky boy SUCKS (ALWAYS has, ALWAYS will) Kenny G ROCKS! ! ! ! ! So, you think I'm wrong on Kenny G? Pop in a Kenny G cd when you and your spouse are all alone and see where it leads.... |
