PostSubject: Started something new with my youth group   Wed Mar 17, 2010 10:01 pm

I was reading a book recently that talked a lot about people stopping
being Christians and becoming red-letter followers of Jesus. You'd have
to read it to know what the guys was talking about, but it made me
think about where my kids need to go. I've not really had a focus for
them, and it's hurt us.

So, I prayed and decided to take a red-letter look at Jesus. We're
taking Mark, the shortest of the gospels, and looking at the things
Jesus said. For a time, I'm tossing the Old Testament and anything from
Romans to Jude out as though we've just heard of Jesus. We're looking
at the teachings and actions of Jesus as though we were there. And,
we're asking several questions during each of these stories:

1. What did Jesus say?

2. Who did He say it to?

3. Why did He say this?

4. What was going on when He made these statements?

5. What did they mean to the 1st century Jews who were hearing Jesus'
teachings for the first time?

My goal is to give myself and my youth a better look into who Jesus is.
To truly follow Him, you've got to get to know Him. So, we're starting
at the beginning of His ministry and following through to the Great
Commission. Why? Ultimately, to follow Christ, you've got to be loving
others by serving them whether it's in our home, school, community, or
to the ends of the earth. I want us as a group to fall in love with
Jesus, look at His claims of who He was, see if His works back that up,
and see if we're mirroring Him at all in our lives. Have we just
believed in Him because we've always been told we have to, or is there
something worth following? Was Jesus a good teacher, or was He really
God in the bod? If He really was God in the flesh, then what are we
gonna do about that as a group and as individuals?

Does that make sense to you?

It's so important to know who Jesus really is.
Then you can understand more from Him and teach the youth group who Jesus was.
I'm sure it was God who guided you to this book.

For me Jesus was the best teacher there ever was and will be.
Why?
Because He's not only God's Son.
No, He brought the things in prayer to God, that's very important.
It's the start from "walking with" God.
That means talk with God about all the things in your life, not matter how small and unimportant or how big and important they are.
God loves it when we come to Him and ask what to do.
Your goal will be in my prayers.

Sounds like an interesting idea. Let us know how it goes.

I'm doing this study on Wednesday nights. We have a strong attendance that night. I think I can really build our faith in Jesus if we can see Him, His work, and His ministry as it really was & still is.

On Sunday nights, however, we have a pathetic turn out. I'm thankful for every youth that comes. So, for a while, I will have a lesson ready if we have enough, but I am also going to be prepared with some board games and other fun stuff. I want the Sunday night kids to talk about how much fun they have on Sunday nights and maybe the rest of the youth will come.

I hope you get more kids on Sunday nights.
It's a very good idea to make fun too on the Sunday nights too.

LOL. I like that. More power to you. Be careful how you word things though: "I think I can really build our faith in Jesus...." It won't be YOU building, and I know you know that.

The Church has done a huge disservice to our youth. They hear all the warm and fuzzy "stories" of the Bible through Sunday school, mostly play games and fun activities in youth group and we adults wonder why they drop out of the faith in high school or college.

They need to have a full understanding of who Jesus is, how much He really loves them and what He did for each one of them individually, and what He calls us to be doing. Jesus has not been made relevant to their lives during the time many of them need Him most.

Actually, the games work. I used way more games with Campus Life than I do teaching, but I am seeing awesome results as God works in these kids' lives.

I think what causes most kids to drop from the faith is that they are mimicking what they see in adults--a dead, meaningless faith. One that just has us sitting in the pews doing nothing more than gossiping about everyone else. Kids want something real. They are not gonna keep hanging out someplace where they hear one thing and see another.

Yes me again who would like to know how it went with the youth group?
Did it work to give the youth and you a better look on who Jesus is?

I'll let you know in a few months or years. It's been weeks into this study so far, and I am just now hitting the 3rd chapter of Mark!

I think it's really cool that you've been inspired to take this approach. Speaking from my own experience I think you have it right, when I'm around someone who truely believes in what they're doing, I can see it in that person and it fills me up too and inspires me. So just praying the things go well with this and that your youth can see an example of pasison and faith through you and your teachings.
