That's pretty cool, but that thing he's playing is just not a bass. Too many high notes. _________________ I might have decided, or maybe not, that I should or shouldn't, depending on the issue or non-issue, to possibly share or not share, any thoughts, opinions, or facts (that might not be deemed factual by some), due to possible fear of any misinterpretation or retribution.

That's what I was thinking. At what point does it quit being a bass and become some sort of bass/guitar hybrid. Next they will just turn a piano side-ways and try to play it like a guitar. _________________ "I used to be indecisive.......... Now I'm not sure."

Looks like someone crossed a bass with a Chapman Stick. I've been playing bass for 31 years, tried 5 & 6 string basses and keep going back to the good ol' 4 string. Anyone that can master an 11 string beast like that is a top-notch musician in my book!

You don't like the low B on a 5 or 6 string? When I was still playing in the band, I only used a 5 or 6 string bass. Loved them! _________________ I might have decided, or maybe not, that I should or shouldn't, depending on the issue or non-issue, to possibly share or not share, any thoughts, opinions, or facts (that might not be deemed factual by some), due to possible fear of any misinterpretation or retribution.

I wish I had a 5-string, or a baritone-tuned 4-string.

No, I don't really like the B string on a 5 or 6. It requires so much more power to really make a string tuned that low ring out. besides, Before I ever played a 5 string, I had put in 20+ years on 4-strings. Some of the greatest music ever recorded was done so with a 4-string anchoring the bottom. I don't downplay the importance of extended-range basses, I just can't get comfortable with one. Anyone that can make a 5 or 6 talk is a top-notch bassist in my book, but y'all can have 'em-I like my 4!

Joe, have you ever played a B-tuned 4-string?

Yep, and I just don't like the tone of the B string because the fundamental note on an open B is between 20 and 30 hz and it requires so much more power to accurately reproduce the open B that it adversely affects the tone of the rest of the strings. In my opinion. Besides, you can get thunderous bottom out of a 4 string in standard tuning and still have plenty of clarity. But as I said in an earlier post, 4-string is my preferred axe. That doesn't mean I'm against extended-range basses. I will spend this lifetime learning the mysteries of my 4 and be quite happy with it and leave the 5's and 6's to those folks that like 'em. I'm a dinosaur.
