This is a basic question that really causes us to think sometimes. Why Jesus? Why do you believe in Jesus and Christianity instead of Buddhism or Wicca or whatever else is out there.

I spent most of my thinking all religion and "belief systems" were a joke. But for quite some time I felt stuck with the glaring question of why are we here, what is our purpose. I actually did some basic research on a few different religions before I felt incredibly convicted to follow Christ. The one glaring difference between Christianity and nearly all other "religions" is that those other religions nearly all say the same thing...."try hard enough and you might find heaven/nirvana". But Christ said that the only way to get to the father is through him alone. There is nothing we can do, only Christ can save us (don't even brother trying, because you cannot do it on your own).

I'll be honest and say when I came to Christ I didn't know there was another option. I was 9 years old, I had grown up going to church, my friends went to church, my family went to church. So I didn't know any different. So I'm going to answer your question as why didn't I jump ship and go some other direction. The answer there is that over the years all that stuff that I've read in the Bible has become real to me. Jesus isn't some abstract idea, he has revealed himself to be a very real person to me. There was a thread on another board talking about the Tomb of Jesus documentary (where someone claims to have found the real tomb where Jesus was and still is buried) and they were speculating on how their lives would be different if it was somehow proven that these fundamental elements of Christianity were shown to be false, and my answer was that it wouldn't change things for me. Something has fundamentally been altered in me, my life, my worldview, etc. because of my faith in Christ. That is my reality.

Staybrite, it is interesting that you point out that Christianity is the only religion that doesn't say "do your best and maybe it will be good enough." I remember as a teenager people pointed out that Christianity was the only religion with a hell of eternal torment (the evangelistic logic was "so don't take the chance that it is the right one, become a Christian before it is too late"). It also reminds me of Brad Stine's reasoning: it was the only religion that said you were filthy, lousy scum, but come on in.

I'm like M77 I grew up (and still am Laughing) in a Christian home, where I went to church every Sunday. I knew no other way, and Christianity just made sense, despite the uncertainties.

I got a lot of that as a teenager too. I think it really hardened me against the truth of Jesus, and took me a long time to finally see my need for salvation.

I love it. I have seen Brad Stine perform twice and never heard him say that, but it is perfect.

In my heart I knew there had to be a Designer behind all this incredible design. At 19 I cried out to this Creator, basically saying "if you really exist, show me". Shortly thereafter I began to "see" all the things in my life that were evil. Things I previously loved, like all my slasher film posters, my porn collection, and my music. I went to put an album on, and for the first time in my life, I heard lyrics that hated God - lyrics that were evil (previously I liked "evil", now I was seeing it as if from God's point of view). This was enough for me to begin searching. I started with the Bible since my Mom believed Christianity and I had a Bible. While studying it and reading other tracts I'd been given, I accepted the Gospel as truth.

I didn't stop there though. I began collecting books from other religions and cults and studying what they believed. I wanted to take an unbiased look at the whole picture. I took a college course on religions of the world. I visited with Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses, and ended up studying their histories, their prophetic failures, doctrinal flip flops and blatant lies documented in their own publications. I began to believe there was ONLY ONE truth with all the others being false. I grew closer to the One who is my Savior and grew stronger in a faith that is based on facts.

In a court of law, evidence is necessary to build a strong case to reach facts. I began looking at evidence, rather than ignorantly accepting anything. I drove to different libraries all over Southern California in my search to verify whether the Bible was true historically, geographically, archeologically, and I studied the manuscript differences.

I eventually summarized my findings in a "Reader's Digest" size work I entitled "Not a Blind Faith". This was a collection of my conclusions, discoveries and works by various writers (who write better than I do).
Here is that booklet:
http://www.jimscmc.com/not/not01.html

I could go on and on with amazing things God has done to demonstrate His providence in my life, as well as the amazing prophecies in the Bible that categorically set it apart from any other religious books (my fav being Daniel 9 that set the exact day that Messiah would arrive, written 400 years before Christ and was accurate to the very day).

For me, it was seeing how Jesus changed my grandfather. As badly as I did not want to believe, it was that faith late in his life that said that Jesus was real and made me want that too. Sadly, it took Pop's death to make me see that.

It isn't an exact quote, but I think it is at the end of Wussification.

For me it was something that happened in my life.
I can't get into details because it's very private.
During that hard time God showed me He will care for me.
I couldn't say no to that.

Thats pretty cool everyone. Very interesting for sure.
For me, I was raised in a religious family. Unfortunately my parents jumped around alot. When i was born we were Lutheran and I was infant baptized there. When I started grade-school we became southern baptist and I was baptized again. By the time I was in the 6th grade we became apostolic charismatics and I was baptized again. The tongues and rolling in the floor freaked my dad out so after about a year (and to my mothers dismay) we changed again. This time going to the Presbyterian Church..a church that taught strict old school Calvinism. This was the riches church in town and where all the "important" people went...the mayor, bankers, lawyers and business excexs." Thats why we went there I think...so my dad could make friends with these people for his business sakes. The other kids there treated my long haired 80s metal-head self like dirt. We went there my entire teenage high school years. I hated it.
After high school I left and never wanted anything to do with Church again. I went somewhat wild. I got into the 80s excessive lifestyle...drugs, sex and rock n roll. I played in lots of bands and worked alot till I got married to my first wife. Then I decided to be a good father/husband. So much for that. We divorced 3 years after getting married.
After that I moved to Tulsa Oklahoma where I went back to church. I went to a church called "GUTS". It was a rock n roll christian church based on the word of faith teachings. I went there along time...and rededicated my life to Christ. I met my wife there. She worked for Oral Roberts University. Anyway, after we had been married for a few years we moved to Saint Louis and I went to church with here family. They were Catholic and went to a polish catholic church. After her father dies we moved back to Texas, where I live now, and We attended a Methodist church for awhile but eventually went to a non denominational church. We believe in Christ and want to keep it simple these days. Love God and Love people and rest in our lord. Thats where I am at now. Just enjoying Jesus and allowing my life to be simple.
