PostSubject: School/Work   Wed Feb 15, 2012 11:01 am

I have a lot of stuff to do for school this term and the next couple of terms, so I need prayer that I'll be able to get everything done...

Basic school stuff:
This term I'm taking the first of three "project" courses which are required for graduation. This term we will be building a website for a pizza restaurant, while the next two will consist of something similar, except that we will be choosing what to do and setting our own goals and stuff. This is a daunting task for me as I've never built a site from the ground up before, and I'm a bit concerned that I'll get bogged down with the amount of work I have to do. The actual coding and site layout is up to us as long as we meet certain requirements. The thing is, I'm not all that well-versed in C# or ASP .NET - my only experience with them has been the two courses we took on the subject, and neither involved anything of this magnitude (mostly just writing simple classes, filling in functionality in existing code, etc.). We have the entire term (about 10 weeks) to get this done, but I'm worried that I won't be able to get it done on time, and I'm also stuck between trying to make it realistic and trying to keep it simple enough that I won't be overwhelmed by the amount of code.

I also have at least three more classes to take to graduate (besides the Project courses), one of which I really don't want to take ("Social Issues In Technology" - you discuss something in class, then you have to research something related to that topic and write a report on it. I hate writing reports and haven't had to write any papers since I took a technical writing course several years ago).

Work:
I am currently working part time as a cashier/supervisor in the parking garage at a local retail/entertainment complex, a job I've had for over 4 years. I like the job even though it doesn't pay very well (it pays enough to cover my bills, but not a lot more). One of the requirements for my major in school is that I have at least 4 credit hours of co-op experience (a paid job in my field of study that I get college credit for - 2 credit hours is equivalent to one term of full-time work or two terms of part-time work). This is really something I should have started a long time ago, but I've been busy and just keep forgetting to get things done, since I'm working and taking class at the same time. My goal is to be done by the end of summer (at least with actual course work), which would mean co-oping and taking at least two classes (online and/or at night) at the same time. My reason for this is that the school is switching to semesters in the fall (part of a statewide initiative to get all state colleges and universities on the same academic schedule in order to make it easier for students to transfer between schools and such), and I'd rather not have to deal with the mess that is sure to ensue during the first few terms following this switch (professors having to go from teaching 10-week terms to teaching 15-week terms, classes being merged and/or adjusted to account for the additional time, etc.). If at all possible, I'd like to continue working my current job on the weekends in order to earn a bit of extra income (though the co-op job would likely pay at least 50% more per hour than what I make now).

Pray that I'm able to sort all of this out and able to get all my work done as quickly as possible.

That sounds like a lot of stuff going on for you there! I will indeed pray for you that you can get everything sorted and working out a good arrangement.

I'll be praying! Just remember that the Lord will work this out for His best no matter what crazy turns this takes. Remember to trust Him with it.

Praying for you brother...it sure sounds like you have your hands full. Back when I was 29 I was also working part-time and trying to finish up college.

It turns out that this website isn't going to be quite as difficult as I had originally thought.

I'm used to working with straight PHP, HTML, etc. - if you want to validate a form, you have to write your own code to do that.

Since ASP .NET is a web application framework, Microsoft has already included tools to do some of the hard stuff for you.

When I created the site in Visual Studio, it automatically generated a default page (with a nice style and a menu that I can modify to meet my needs), along with basic login and registration forms.

I've changed the title to fit my needs, and modified the registration form as well. I've still got a lot of work to do, but I'm getting there slowly.

As far as the co-op: I went to an orientation meeting Tuesday night and submitted the eligibility form to my program chair. At this point I have to create a resume (I had one years ago but I have no idea where it went) and make an appointment with the co-op coordinator by March 2nd.
