Common problem, I'm sure. How do I normalize the volume of my audio files so that the changes aren't so jolting when playing them back? I've read about "sound check" in iTunes and iOS devices, but it doesn't seem to actually work. I need something that works on a Mac.
I've recently read about "aacgain" which I could run from a command line. There is also iVolume, which seems to use the same algorithm. Anyone have experience with these? Any other suggestions?

I don't use Mac, but I can actually get Windows Media Player to do it for a playlist....however it seems microsoft isn't going to support that software anymore....so I will likely be in the same boat in a few years.

Do any Apple devices support ReplayGain tags?

After reading on mp3gain/aacgain and iVolume, I believe that is what is used. The problem is that the default iTunes algorithm used to determine the value of that tag is a poor one. The aforementioned programs set it using a better algorithm. Just curious if anyone knows better than I, or has any real-world experience doing this.

I've always used Foobar2000 to set the tags. Not sure if that works on Apple.

I've used Mp3Gain for nearly a decade. No issues and it works pretty darn good.

OK, so I tried out iVolume this morning. It's shareware, of the nagware variety, so after you process maybe 200 songs it starts halting and prompting you to register every 25 songs. After 1000 songs it stops altogether.
It is super easy to use, and seems very fast (when it's not paused). I haven't tried listening to the adjusted songs yet, to see how the leveling worked out. Maybe it will be worth the $30, I don't know.
I think I'm going to give aacgain a shot, too.
