The greatest commandment is mentioned in Deuteronomy 6:5, in a part of Scripture that is known by Jews and Christians as the "Shema", or "Hear", because the first word of the passage (Deut 6:4-9) is "Shema". It's a passage that tells the people who God is (Deut 6:4), what to do with God (Deut 6:5), and how to think/meditate upon the law (Deut 6:6-9). In other words, Jesus was not teaching anything new, but he was reminding the people - and forcing them - to think upon the law and how to actually apply it, as m77 says.

Any specific questions? I'm sorry, I sort of typed that without really trying to be clear - my thoughts are very disorganized. Smile

Oh okay. I was confused because Jesus said that the greatest commandments were to love God and love your neighbor as yourself. I got a tad nervous because I was taught that the greatest commandment was shema and not love. I get uncomfortable when people say things that remind me of Adventism. It's not your fault. I do get confused really easily though. Christians are really good at accidentally confusing me. I don't understand how some Christians view the older texts. People will talk about them, but not go by them exactly. I'm against picking and choosing though I'm sure that's not what Christians are trying to do. I think the old testament things give a nice background and point to the New Testament and to Christ. Christians are to go by what Christ teaches. I really wouldn't worry about other things or if there is something in the Torah I have to keep or whatever.

I have so much difficultly when Christians write about the old testament stuff and also works. My brain interprets it like they're saying that we're under old covenant laws and that we are saved by faith+ works. That may not even be what they're saying at all. Some Christians are easy for me to understand, but many aren't and I misinterpret them. I also don't have proper definitions for all the Christianese words. I'm learning quickly though.

Faith is relevant for a Christian. Works are also relevant. But they will not get you into heaven. That part is covered by grace. I have come to believe that if you pursue God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, that all of those other things like faith and works will fall into place.

Basically, works are performed, not as a condition to be saved, but rather they become a by-product of being saved by grace.

Interestingly enough, the greatest commandment, that of loving God, is contained in the Shema, in Deuteronomy 6:5.

Also, what I meant is that I was taught that the meaning of the word shema, hear, is the greatest commandment. Not love.

Don't worry about taking. Sometimes, it takes time to really understand what the Bible says - time to think and to ask God.

Also I've been learning that I need patience. I walk to learn everything now and I need to know that that's not gonna happen. Like you said, things take time.
