I'm a really bad Christian. Like, I'm no good at this. Or maybe I'm just freaking out when I don't need to be? I feel like I'm not doing it right.

Keep your eyes on Jesus and you'll be all right.  Very few, if any have it all together.

To be honest I don't think there's ever been a good Christian...

None of us are good Christians...if you're prideful enough to think you're good, then you're not. All we can do is try, and fail, and get up and try again.

We're all bad Christians. If we were good, we wouldn't need Jesus.

I often have the same thought. One Finnish metal band has a good song that fits the situation.

HB - Frozen Inside

"My heart, it thought it had found you.
The atmosphere rose, it rose to the sky
We saw you healing and we stood rejoicing
For your goodness was truly shown to us.

Once more the feelings that I had
won't last from today until tomorrow.
Back to reality and living passively.
All by myself in my world again.
When you spend time all alone
you will come to see the death of your faith
in the almighty God.

I am frozen inside, let me praise and love!
Though I want to know you,
I cannot force my heart to thaw.
The props built by me, they'll collapse with time,
And then it will be seen that
a homemade faith, it fails in front of God.

Where can you find love like God's love?
I have prayed countless times to receive.
Why do some have so much?
I strive for just one touch.
Am I of less worth than them or what?

Where is your presence, oh Jesus?
You said you'll give me abundant life.
Has my trust been in vain?
I can't fight off the pain.
Is my trust in a living or dead God?
When you spend time all alone
you will come to see the depth of your faith
in the almighty God.

I am frozen inside, let me praise and love!
Though I want to know you,
I cannot force my heart to thaw.
The props built by me, they'll collapse with time,
And then it will be seen that
a homemade faith, it fails in front of God.

Thunder sounds again, will the Lord appear?
And give a sign to follow his word?
You can waste your time waiting all your life..
..Or just obey his will!

If you're frozen inside
Cannot praise or love
He wants you to be you
No need to earn his love 'cause

Every moment he says:
"I love you, I care."
This road I made just for you
To be together now and forever"

We are all spiritual screw ups.  That's part of what worshipping in spirit and truth is about.  We walk in the Holy Spirit following Jesus.  We admit that we are broken and would be nothing without Him.  We basically are nothing but the Son of God moved Himself into the neighborhoods of our hearts.  We have communion with Him, but we are not puppets that He controls from the inside.  The more we fellowship with Him through prayer, absorbing His words, and putting that word into action then we become more like Him.  It is a process as He did everything to save us and keep us that way.  It is our place to cultivate our side of the relationship by trying to know Him better and better.  Sadly, even as a youth pastor, I fail miserably with that.

Thank You, Jesus, that I am still fearfully and wonderfully made and that I am saved to the uttermost through Your sacrifice and resurrection!

Because you are human.  We all have this idea that the onus is on us to please God, but it is not.  In fact, Paul wrote that when we trust in Jesus, we become "the righteousness of God."  It isn't that we are made righteous in and of ourselves, we are covered with and transformed into God's righteousness.  I think that is really hard for us to accept, particularly American Christians because we have been beaten over the head with this whole "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" garbage that goes along with being a "self-made man/woman" that is totally opposed to the biblical Christianity, which teaches us that our very best human efforts are like a used tampon in the eyes of God and that we are completely unable to do anything of value apart from Christ.

But still, we labor on.

Paul wrote most of the New Testament, had the entire Old Testament memorized, was visited by Jesus Himself, gave up all his worldly possessions and became a missionary, paying his own way not accepting handouts from anyone...

The point ?  Paul gave his entire life to Christ, did everything that would be expected of a "good" Christian... and yet he himself said:
"Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.
For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me."

Can we believe that Paul was the least of them ? How can we even begin to imagine saying that Paul did not deserve to be called an Apostle ??
These are not the only passages that Paul thought so lowly of himself.
He would consider himself a "bad Christian".

I agree with everyone else here in the fact that we're ALL bad Christians... none of us can measure up to anything we deem as a "good Christian".  This is just the way most humans are hard wired -in the DNA.

Unless you belong to a Name-It-And-Claim-It cult, or positive confession groups, then you understand that you're a sinner and completely incapable of being "good" and "acceptable" to a holy perfect God. This is good ! This is what God wants for us to recognize. But don't stop there - it's dangerous and self-destructive to your walk, as you will seek to please Him, to do good and avoid evil. Again, not bad things to live by as a believer, but with the wrong understanding: VERY self-destructive.
We CAN'T be good, holy, obedient - we can try, and sometimes sail along quite well for a period... but give it time - you WILL fail.  Paul knew this, and despite his vast knowledge of Scripture, he still felt like a failure to God.  To me this is comforting and revealing.  I'm comforted in knowing that I cannot live up to the world's definition (or even many Church's definitions) of what a "good Christian" should be. And I'm comforted in knowing that even after Paul beat himself up in Romans Chapter 7, ending it with "Who will deliver me from this body of death ?", he recognized his COMPLETE need and surrender to Christ to save him. He reveals that despite him almost living a life completely surrendered to God in obedience, that he was still FAR from being worthy to stand before the flawless Creator.  He also reveals that it's in NO way up to us to be a "good Christian" -All the rules and commands are there for 3 reasons: ONE is to keep peace and have a set of rules to avoid anarchy. TWO is so we could come to the realization that WE CAN'T DO IT 100%, we can't live up to all the rules and THREE (follows TWO) is to DRIVE us to our knees in desperation and complete reliance upon our Savior.

Why do we need a "Savior" in the first place ?  To save us from ourselves.  Praise God in heaven that I'm a Christian !  I stopped labeling myself "bad or good", cuz I know who I am IN CHRIST. This is what you need to focus on - not your shortcomings, failures or good deeds... that doesn't define you as a believer.  It's not WHAT you do that defines you, but rather WHO defines you. And Jesus took it all in your place so that you could be defined by the Father as HIS.

Tell yourself that everyday - you're HIS, you belong to HIM !  He bought you with the Blood of His own Son.  He knows you're broken - He knows we're ALL broken beyond earthly repair-God never buys anyone who ISN'T broken.

Thank you. I've been learning that more and more recently. It can be tough to learn. Especially since I'm being taught a different thing on a regular basis.
