PostSubject: The "myth" of WILL POWER   Wed Jul 08, 2015 9:13 am

NEWS FLASH--Your WILL has no POWER. We don't grow spiritually by "trying really hard" to be better people. Growth happens when we CHOOSE to DAILY spend time with Jesus--in His Word--allowing HIM to renew our mind--as our hearts & minds are rnewed, i.e. we begin to see things from God's perspective... our behavior "naturally" follows suit. Where the mind goes the man (or woman) follows! I.e. we grow not by taking control, but by surrendering it--to Jesus! Thissong is called "CONTROL" Enjoy!

After years and years of trying to be a better person, better father, better husband I am still guilty of "trying really hard" to be better.  I think part of it is the American paradigm that insists we pull ourselves up by boot-straps and put forth more effort to achieve our goals.

Thanks Staybright...

I think you are right about the American culture thing...

I was reading 2 Cor. 4 yesterday... Paul talks about the "god of this age" and how it blinds people so they can't see the truth/reality/power of the Gospel ---I truly believe that the "god" of each age is THE CULTURE--what's politically correct, or socially popular, acceptable, etc...  this thinking dominates and absolutely shapes how people think.  The Gospel has always been COUNTER cultural---calling people OUT of the mindset of "this wolrd" to be renewed by a NEW mindset... the "mind of Christ"...

Press on friends!

"Pull yourself up by your bootstraps" is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.  It can't be done!  Whether we like it or not, John Donne was right:  no man (woman) is an island.  We all need someone, and what better someone to rely on than Jesus.

Interesting, I often think of people at work who will tell me "you're a good Christian man" or "you try to be a good Christian man". I tell them "No, I am not a good Christian man, I strive to be a better one". So I see it as I strive or WISH to be a better man but I don't try. As Yoda said:

Wise words for all, but I would expect nothing less from a Jedi Master.
