This video's been online for something over a month now. I always think it's cool when artists play through their material, particularly when said material is 25 years old and almost forgotten. Not to mention, that is one far-out bass design.

That's a Factor by Kubicki.  The hipshot detuner is great for on the fly Drop D Tuning.  I've had the privilege of owning one for a very short time.  Sold it to pay off other bills.

Robert Pallen is a great bassist.  One of my favs!

It's Drop D, but it isn't at the same time. It allows you to keep standard fingering (which is useful, because you don't have to learn another configuration) and yet gain a little more range and do things that aren't physically possible/easy with a 5-string. I want to try one. How was the tone on your bass?

I love playing a 5 or a 6 string.  Once you get used to the extra, you can do most anything you'd want.  However, the key is how large your hands are.  I have trouble playing guitars with slimmer necks and only buy guitars that most players would find clunky.  I love them, though, because of my hands.  So, playing a 5 string was like finding home.  A 6 is nice, too, because I don't have to slide up the neck to do runs and fills.

With the new blues album, though, I don't get much room to shine on the bass.

Pallen is awesome and I never could keep up with him.  Actually, I was amazed at his playing and never tried.  He is definitely jazz trained.

The tone was great!  Unfortunately I didn't really have the time to get used to it or really dig into it.  I only had it for a month.  One cool thing about the Low E is that there are extra frets on the head stock so you can leave it de-tuned and just fret the E when you need it.

I've messed with a 5-String here and there and it just didn't do anything for me.

One would think there would be lots of room to move on bass with Blues.  Are there extremely busy guitar riffs?

I did work out something close to the beginning of Bumble Boob Groove at one point.  Love that bass line!

In some places, yes.  However, with the whole cigar box guitar movement, we see a lot of folks trying to do more "less is more".  I am trying to raise that bar a bit.  I do some moving around on the bass, but none of the songs really screamed for me to do all I could.  I felt I needed to stay more in the pocket than try to over polish if that makes sense.

Totally makes sense.  There's a time to move that bass line all over the place and there's a time to just punch the root.
