Covers

So I know some of us are interested in cover songs. I like when someone takes a song and makes it their own while still retaining the spirit of the original. So, here's a couple of my favorites:

I really like Golden Resurrection's cover of this Kansas song.

I agree. I like covers when they aren't exact duplicates.  I LOVE the Brad Paisley one you linked, but then I love country.

I like covers that take the song a step further without destroying the integrity of the original.

If anyone has followed my few posts about cover songs on facebook, you'll know I am a big fan of cover songs...but only if they are done well.  I have heard countless cover songs that are absolutely horrible, and many more that are simply "meh".  Some can be fun, even if they aren't "fantastic" but they can't be boring and uninspired.

I'm not at all a fan of country but that Paisley one is done very well (and he has always impressed me as a guitarist), bonus points for getting ZZTop to appear in the video was well.

One of my favorite covers is metal guitar master Axel Rudi Pell's cover of this Phil Collins classic.  He took what was a predominately drum driven song and pulled the guitars to the forefront without ruining the feel of the original (warning for those of you with musical ADD....it's a long one).

Here's one of my favorite covers.  I'd never heard The Who's original version and was curious to hear it.  When I did I, thought it was rather sucky.  Glad the Scorps breathed life into it.

That is a nicely done version. Off topic, do you listen to ARP much? If so, what is their lyrical content? I often been curious about the band, particularly since the Axel himself has often played guitar for Rob Rock and Rob sing vocals on his Nasty Reputation CD (which is ironic, since Axel said in an interview when asked about politics, "Not quite my cup of tea. Especially concerning music I’m rather ambivalent. Somebody just asked what I’d think about Christian Metal and I had to say that this is almost some kind of extremism in my opinion. Somebody’s trying to convince somebody else of his opinion. Same thing with Black Metal! I think politics have to be handled very carefully…").

This has always been one of my favorite covers.



I think about a thousand artists have done this song, but Vinnie does it with his particular tone, and I just love it.

I haven't listened to a whole lot of ARP.  I have a compilation album of his and that is all.  I didn't notice anything that sounded really bad in the lyrics, but I tend to miss stuff often in the lyrical department...so I'm probably not the best person to ask.

Agreed, not that I am at all familiar with the original...but this is still a great recording.

Never been a big fan of cover. But i've always loved this one.

Sounds like some good old Delta Blues!  Very cool!
Kind of reminds me of when Mark Lanegan did a cover of an old song made popular by Lead Belly.



Here is one of Lead Belly's version.



And before anyone screams at me, yes Nirvana covered the song too, but it was after Mark Lanegan did his much better cover.  As a matter of fact I think Cobain does backing vocals for Lanegan's version.

There's a whole album of metal ABBA covers that is (mostly) really good.  



And I know most folks here aren't big on scream/growl vocals, but I also really like August Burns Red's take on Britney Spears' "Hit Me Baby (One More Time)"



And for something completely different...

I dig that Civil Wars take on "Billie Jean".  Sometimes you can completely change the style of a song....and even change is "flavor", but still have it come off really well.

I'm not at all a fan of this band (Collide) or even the style of music, but I really dig this cover of the Moody Blues classic.

Here's the Finnish band Venia with their cover of D's Desperate Cries from the Temporary Insanity release that Roxx Productions put out a few years ago.

A couple more of my favorites. The first one was shared here on another thread not too long ago.

That Disturbed cover is excellent, and while I am not really at all a fan of Marilyn Manson, I have to confess that the cover is done very well and has all the elements of what I consider a great cover.

I dig the Venia song, but having never been much of a Deliverance fan I don't recognize it as a cover.

Yes!  I love that Disturbed cover.  I almost posted that Manson cover earlier.  Somehow I think the original is creepier--Annie Lennox just creeps me out.

I agree, 80's Annie Lennox could put out a creepier vibe than Manson himself.  Now she is considerably more docile.  Her outfit & bizzare makeup when she sang Freddie Mercury's part in the duet with David Bowie for "Under Pressue" was really creepy looking.
