Well by the grace of God (and I’m sure your prayers) I was actually able to make it through the MRI yesterday.  I have to give a lot of kudos to my wife as well.  They let her in the room and she was able to hold on to my hand during the entire procedure.
The medication I had taken an hour before wasn’t quite working the first time they stuck me in there so they pulled me back out and I was allowed to take a second dose and wait a few minutes.  I was in the machine the first round for 20 to 25 minutes with my arms stretched over my head and it was still rather difficult to control my breathing.  By the time they pulled me out and started the I.V. (to pump the contrasting solution into my veins) I was feeling a little more “mellow” and the second round in the machine was less than 15 minutes, so not nearly as bad.  Your shoulders really hurt after having been stuck over your head like that for only about 20 minutes.  Reminds me of what Jeff said regarding his heart surgery (only I am sure his was far worse).
Keeping my eyes closed helped as well (they actually let me have a wash cloth to cover my eyes).  With my eyes closed it was almost as if I could convinced myself that my head wasn’t completely in that coffin like device.
I was quite relieved when the whole thing was over.  The meds do make you quite sleepy though.  I think I passed out on the couch around 9:30 and the wife said it was difficult to get me up and into bed.  Now just praying (and hoping) that there isn’t anything seriously wrong with my liver.

Thanks for all the support guys (and gals) you rock.

Very glad to hear it.

Quite possibly  Very Happy  But when your arms are held in an unnatural position for some time, they will get sore.

But I'm glad that you made it through the MRI.  Was it extremely loud?

My shoulders recovered in less than an hour, so it couldn't have been nearly as bad as it was for you (makes me wonder a little though about the agony Christ suffered on the cross, yikes).

It was pretty darned loud, but that part didn't really bother me (I've flown in Army Helicopters that were just as loud...and sounded as if they might be tearing themselves apart while in flight).  I was a little worried that I wouldn't be able to hear the technician tell me when to hold my breath though because I'm a little hard of hearing (too many rock concerts and Air force airplanes without hearing protection) and as you know they have you wear ear plugs during the MRI.  But her voice was amplified so I could hear her pretty well.  Strange part was the feeling of waves passing through your body when it was cranked up loud.

Oh joy!  Sorry to hear about that.  Hope you aren't claustrophobic.

I had them do one on my brain while they were looking at my liver.  It was a little disturbing to see the results.

^ LOL !!

Alldat -  Not sure how all that works exactly, but I have had countless MRIs in the last 10 years despite all that hardware, brackets, screws, etc. Perhaps it's the material, like Titanium or whatever, instead of steel. Idk

Beardad - I agree with your assessment on panic attacks and a mid-life realization of the immanency of death. While I have not had attacks based on my new-found concerns of death and "becoming a memory", I have had many sleepless nights due to philosophical thoughts.
I'm sure many mid-agers do experience attacks based on this worry about mortalty, but my panic attacks were due to my Mitral Valve Prolapse and a condition called Dysautonomia. I've almost controlled it with diet, but occasionally feel it creeping on.

Staybrite - SO GREAT to hear the news bro ! May the Lord see to it that your findings are not serious, and that whatever it is, He WILL take care of.

Nah, it doesn't bother me.  This will be my fifth one.  Fortunately, it's just a yearly check-up to make sure the cyst in my sphenoid sinus hasn't returned.  And since I've already met my out-of-pocket for the year, the MRIs won't cost me anything Very Happy

Heard from my doctor yesterday evening and it turns out I have a hemangioma on my liver.  Which is fancy talk for a bundle of blood vessels clustered together on the surface that look like a legion (some people have them on their skin and are often called birthmarks).  Apparently it isn't cancerous and is so small that it's nothing to worry about.  Thanks again for all the prayers, they were greatly appreciated.
