He is a great player and a fellow cigar box guitar builder/player. A lot of CBG builders can't stand him but I believe it is out of jealousy. He knows how to make a guitar talk whether it has 2 or 6 strings or something in between.

You've also got to hear these guys:
You will see from the video that The Swamp Drivers also play homemade instruments. Terry Johnson, guitarist and vocalist, is playing a frying pan guitar. Their drummer really uses trash cans for toms. They also use guitars made from shovels and even a broom.
Then, you've got to hear Shane Speal. He's the founder of the modern day CBG movement. He started building these back in the early 90s. He's done tons to get people to build and play these primitive instruments but consider them as legitimate instruments.
Then there is some dude named Glenn Kaiser who plays these crazy things. I don't know why that name sounds familiar. LOL
\
Then there is Christopher Ameruso:
There is also The Dusk Brothers:
The husband and wife team Hymn For Her:
AJ Gaither:
The lovely Samantha Fish:
And them some goofball named Big Chris & D'Bare Bones Band:

I left off others like John Nickel, Microwave Dave, Gypsy Carnes, Antisocial Butterflies, etc. The cigar box guitar community is growing but we have yet to have someone really make a huge splash on the market. I wanted to do a blues album when I was doing Mission Of One but never really felt like I could pull it off for some reason. When I got into making and playing these, I knew it was more than possible! Our movement's "there are no rules" mentality make playing music pretty much whatever you want it to be.
I also knew that I wanted to be a light in this community. While there is some gospel in blues, most of the artists you will check out in the CBG world aren't really making Jesus known. Glenn does, but that's it. I wanted Big Chris & D'Bare Bones Band to bridge the gap between sacred and secular. That's why there are songs about social issues, silly songs, stories, and bold declarations of my faith in Jesus. It isn't a Christian album. It isn't a secular album. It is both.
Ok, now that I've shipwrecked this thread, how about that Justin Johnson?

No worries alldat. I'm actually familiar with some of the folks you mentioned (Glenn, Shane Speal, Swamp Drivers) and now I have some folks to check out.

Some of it gets rather vulgar. Shane Speal definitely does at times. AJ Gaither, while a good performer, is also more than a bit vulgar and sometimes anti-Christian. I won't buy anything more from him just because I can't support what he does. Of course, I'll definitely support anything that Glenn Kaiser does just because he's so good AND because his love of the Lord shines through.

Thanks for the heads up. I don't really mind some vulgarity as long as it isn't excessive (in fact I use the occasional four letter word) but I try not to listen to anti-Jesus stuff. I love Son House but I have to skip one of his songs when it comes on because it makes fun of church.
And yeah, I have quite a bit of Glenn's stuff - even the worship albums. He's so talented and genuine.

Then don't buy an album by AJ.

And don't stare at Samantha Fish's legs. I know you were. I saw you.

With that dress, it was hard to notice anything else in the video. I didn't even see the drumset until almost 2 minutes in.

A lot of guys have said the same thing. In some of her newer videos, she has worn longer skirts. I've even seen one with her in pants. The talent is the same whether you see her legs or not. She is a phenomenal guitar player with a great voice regardless.

I've to check it all out later. Levi comes to stay for one night with opa and oma. That means not so much time to be online.

While you'd like the music of most of these artists, Yvonne, I will tell you that only Glenn Kaiser and myself on this list are in the Christian camp musically. You can also check out Mark "Mississippi Slide" Jeghers for more Christian blues played on CBG.

I found out from another builder why many players and builders especially don't care for him. I won't spread the gossip I heard, but I can understand their dislike if it is true. I am going to dig a little and see if I can substantiate any of it. Otherwise, I am not going to change my mind about Justin having never met him.
