Guilty/Forgiven has start the thread: Reading together? EmptyChristians ! Wanna do this??
I thought maybe there are more members who like it to start reading the Bible together?
So you are not alone to read the Bible daily.
It helps to read each day the same chapter(s)

Do you like it to read the Bible together?

I'm in !

Any particular books you're interested in ? Maybe one you haven't read in a long time ?

I think we should start this off light and begin in the New Testament, what you you all think ?

I think it's a great idea, but knowing what happens in my house I'll probably be able to only drop in to the discussions now and again.

The more we read the Bible, the better!

What about Starting Point by Andy Stanley? I disagree with his views on predestination but other than that I like the book.

My wife and I are actually going through this book starting next week in our small group. To have a second conversation here once a week would be cool (for me...).

Only if you are talking about background music!

How about John's gospel?  Even though it will take forever, we could do a chapter a week.  That will give us time to let it soak in and maybe see something we've never seen before.  Perhaps it will only remind us of something we already know.  Regardless, I think this would be a good way to do this.  Also, we should pick a day coming up to actually start to give a few more people time to join us.

My suggestion will be that we start reading on the first of September.
That is giving others the time to join us.

It's a good idea to start with John 1:1?
TShall we take Thursday to start to read an other chapter?

Let's start on Sept. 1 and we read one chapter per week.  That will give us time to discuss it.

Doing a chapter per week also helps anyone who is very busy to keep up.  You can read it all at once and only once, read it every day, or divide it up into sections and read a short devotional with it.  You will have 7 days.

7 Days?  That sounds so familiar.  Isn't that a band?  lol!  When my memory escapes me, I feel like I have the "weight of the world" upon me.

Read it this morning. I'm partial to the Amplified version as it seems to try and translate the original language most appropriately. I was particularly struck by two verses:

The Light shines on in the [c]darkness, and the darkness did not understand it or overpower it or appropriate it or absorb it [and is unreceptive to it].

So the Light, Jesus, is not understood, overpowered, appropriated or absorbed by the darkness, and the darkness is unreceptive to Him.

That's huge. That means that no matter what we're going through, no matter what the world does to us, it will not overpower, appropriate, or absorb Jesus. Jesus will defeat it!

The other verse was:

16 For out of His fullness [the superabundance of His grace and truth] we have all received grace upon grace [spiritual blessing upon spiritual blessing, favor upon favor, and gift heaped upon gift].

This is the kind of verse to meditate on. Despite some folks telling you this is money or financial gain, think about the blessings you have. Spouse, kids, grandkids (not me but some of you), a job you like (or at least one that pays most of the bills), a car to drive, a house to live in, food to eat, clothes to wear, music you like and can listen to, a TV and shows to watch, books to read, a bed to sleep in... the list goes on and on. Jesus gave us all these blessings!

How awesome is our God!

I agree, good post Ishmael

I've read it over the last few days.  The verse that really spoke to me was verse 17...

The Law was given by Moses, but Jesus Christ brought us undeserved kindness and truth.

Basically summing up the NT in one verse.  Jesus coming to die for those who don't deserve what he has given us.  Not really deep and profound, but it kind of hit home when reading it.  I think the word 'UNDESERVED' was the real punch of that verse.

I may have to read some of John in The Message, as that can really bring things to life in a different and interesting way.

I noticed a couple of things.

I noticed how when John the Baptist is first mentioned it is said that he was sent from God to testify.  It wasn't his own doing.  God sent him.  John's life and mission was all about Jesus.  He was on God's team and ready to play however his coach, God, told him.  John was a faithful man just because of his relationship to God.  There was no fear.  He just did what he knew to be right--keep pointing people to the coming of the Messiah.

I also like at the end where Jesus refers to Himself as "the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth".  Even from the first of His ministry, Jesus was letting people know that He was the path between heaven and earth.

I have to stick with "Baptist".  This proves that we are the only true denomination.  lol!

Besides, if Jesus said it in the only true King James English, then it had to be true.

lol! lol! lol! lol! lol!

I had several thoughts.  First, the intertwining of the missions of Jesus and John.  Two distinct people, one the Light, the other sent to point to the Light.

Second, I wondered about the whole part of the priests asking why he was baptizing, so I did some digging.  Baptism in the Jewish tradition is for Gentiles converting.  They stand in the water while elders recited the Law and then dipped into the water and were circumcised, making the Law binding on them.  But John was baptizing Jews, and the Pharisees believed and taught that no one except the Messiah was permitted to add new rites to the Law of Moses, so that is why they asked about him being the Messiah.

Third, I wonder if John had been raised to know his cousin Jesus' story or if his proclamation of Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world was divinely inspired.

Fourth, Andrew finds Jesus and immediately goes and tells his brother Simon.  Philip finds Jesus and immediately goes and tells Nathanael.  You find Jesus, you want to tell people about it.

Fifth, the very end part about the angels ascending and descending on the Son of Man reminds me of Jacob's ladder.  I think Jesus is taking that image and placing himself as the conduit between God and humanity as part of the revisioning of spiritual Israel.

1. Much like us now.
2. That's interesting - thanks for sharing that.
3. Even if he knew the story, wouldn't his statement still be inspired? I mean, this is a Jewish guy saying stuff that would have caused him to be a pariah at best, stoned and killed at worst.
4. Yes! I'm stealing this!
5. Jesus likes to do things that are sort of vague and symbolic (and not at all 3 point sermons...) and I've often wondered if this was one of those times.
