PostSubject: Whitecross - S/T vs 1987   Whitecross - S/T vs 1987 I_icon_minitimeFri Feb 03, 2017 9:35 pm

I always had a love for the s/t album. It came along at a key moment in my life. It's also got a sound that I love:  big guitars and monstrous drums.

When 1987 came out, I was really disappointed because the drums sounded so much weaker than the original. I also didn't really care for Scott's lower register vocals.

Fast forward 12 years now. I pulled 1987 out the other day for the first time in years. This record smokes!  I still like the original's drum sound a bit more, but I enjoy this 1987 album a lot more than I used to. Rex's guitars sound much better on this. The rhythm guitar especially sounds really good. But you can tell that the 18 years between the two versions gave Rex time to further hone the solos. They're faithful to the original, but still sound better.

The s/t will always hold a nostalgic place for me, but I gotta say, 1987 is probably going to be what I reach for when I want to hear these songs.

I haven't heard 1987.  For me, when I hear a recording and like it, I get used to it and usually have a heard time with remixes, remasterings and re-recordings as they don't sound like what I have burned into my brain.  I probably should take a listen to 1987 at some point just to hear what they did.

I still prefer the original over 1987.

Most redone songs or albums don't do it for me.  But 1987 is pretty much the exception.  Love the original but for some reason I love the rerecorded one better.

I prefer 1987, but only because I never owned the original, and by the time I heard it the production sounded horrific compared to 1987.

I prefer 1987.  The drums on the original have so much reverb that they sound fake.  With the newer version, the kit sounds like you are in the room with them when they recorded.  The drums sound natural.

the original was recorded in a garage .... and not even a shoestring budget...

Yeah the 1987 version is infinitely better sonicly....

I havent heard the original in eons but that I would love to hear it again...

I end up going for the S/T. When ever I listen to a disc it is in the car with the bass turned up a notch or two while my hearing aids are turned off. The production on the S/T is so "beefy" ,yet 1987 hardly has any to the point I keep wanting to say..."Where's the beef?"
