PostSubject: Does anyone observe Lent?   Wed Mar 01, 2017 6:03 pm

While the Southern Baptists do not officially observe Lent, some congregations or individuals do.  I know that some other denominations do as well.  Do you?  If you do, what are you getting rid of?  What are you doing differently to try to grow your relationship with Jesus during this season?

I've been wrestling with my overeating.  I know it is sin and it is something I love and am good at!  But, I am going back to the low-carb eating for Lent.  It gives me a definite start time and something to do spiritually to attack this.  I need God to break my desire to over-eat.  I am no good to my wife dead from a heart attack or stroke because I wanted more cookies or a second helping of mashed potatoes.

So, what are you giving up for Lent?

I observe Lent (but my wife and son do not). Our church doesn't observe it but a few years ago I did and got a real feeling of unity with other believers. (We do observe Advent as a family.)

Anyway, this year for Lent I can't decide. I'm already fasting fiction books and beer for the whole year... I know it started yesterday so I need to get on with it.

I don't necessarily give something up for Lent, but in recent years I have started to observe the season as a time of greater spiritual and liturgical focus.  This year I am choosing to concentrate on the spiritual discipline of Lectio Divina.

I did that a few years ago - read, meditate, pray, contemplate, right?

I observe others observing lent. I applaud and commend those who take it seriously and truly grow spiritually from it, but I am confused by those who do it because it's tradition or just something their parents or church body does. I even pity the fools (ode to Mr. T Smile ) that are not true Believers but do it, like they think observing Lent will get them into Heaven. Sad

We observe Lent and Ash Wednesday.  And we're doing the Bible in 90 Days.

I have observed it in the past sometimes but not really this year. Like BearDad, it seems more tradition of man than anything in the Bible. The same with Advent. One could argue we should practice drawing closer to God year round, of course. geek

I feel that both Advent or Lent should be a personal thing if you choose to do it.  There is nothing telling us to or not to partake of these in the Bible.  I just believe that however you choose to do these should be something that you truly feel would strengthen and build your faith & love towards Jesus.  For me, changing how I eat would be resisting sin.  I know that this isn't what God wants for me.  That means something to me whether it does to anyone else or not.

That's where I am with it alldat. I don't do it just because it's part of the liturgical calendar. I do it as a way to reflect on Easter and what it means as a believer.

My pastor and I were actaually talking last night about man-made traditions and Lent started the conversation. I finally told him that to me it all comes down to motivation. Think of the woman who gave all she could even though it wasn't much. Jesus honored her gift over the wealthy man's.

Here's a general history of Lent.

Yes, I used to be anti-liturgy because it was "religion" and "traditions of men," but when I started studying medieval liturgical practice as part of my early music courses (taught by a Buddhist and a Jew) I began to see the value of liturgy.  I began to see liturgy as a way of unifying the Body of Christ.  When I/you celebrate Lent or Advent or take communion or sing the Doxology or or recite the Apostles' Creed or whatever ritual I/you do, we are joining with thousands and millions of other believers who are doing--and have historically done--the same basic thing.  Sure the details may be different, but we are united in that one celebration.  To me, that's pretty cool.  Now I'm not saying this to say I'm right and if you don't do it you're wrong.  If you don't feel motivated to do it, then don't do it.  That's where the vain ritual comes in--people doing the rituals without their hearts being in it.  I hear people all the time making a big deal about not being able to figure out what to give up for Lent.  If you don't know what to do, don't do it.  If God wants you to surrender something, God'll let you know what it is.

I haven't observed Lent in about 10 years. However after reading your original post I hope you find this helpful. I too have struggled with overeating and it's made me feel just lousy. The problem is I just didn't know when to stop. I tried different fad diets; no carb, low carb, gluten free you name it. I always found my self still hungry and then go binge eating. What actually helped me was eating smaller meals but more frequently. That way I was less hungry throughout the day. I would choose a more healthy snack and limit the amount I would take in. I found I was less hungry at meal times and was less likely to over eat. Hope that helps. God Bless you bro

When I was a kid my mom made us observe lent and I'm not sure why. We only knew of Catholics doing that and we were never Catholic but all of a sudden she stopped and told us we didn't have to observe it either. In other words I gave up lent for lent and never took it back up again. confused

I've done it, giving up a video game at one point. Pretty much never played it after that. Good way to kick the habit.
