Changed your life forever?

I recently saw this on an old blog post by John Mark McMillan, and the stories behind some of the choices were really cool. I'll start, so everyone feels comfortable and it doesn't have to be someone you still listen to, just an album that changed your life.

1. Boston - Boston - Junior high
The first time I heard this, I was listening to Garth Brooks, Randy Travis, and Ricky Van Shelton and had no idea what rock music was. Without my dad playing me this album, I'd probably be listening to Kenny Chesney and Toby Keith (yuck.).

2. Five Iron Frenzy - Our Newest Album Ever! - high school
Their second release, but the first one I bought. Reese is still one of my favorite songwriters and I still listen to FIF (and Brave Saint Saturn, and Roper, and Guerilla Rodeo...). These guys showed me ska-punk (and later just rock with horns) could be fun and intelligent.

3. Bob Dylan - The Times They Are A-Changin' - college
Bob Dylan is a long time favorite of mine. I have about 30 of his albums and love his songwriting and approach to music (and I think he's still a Christian. Even lyrics after the Christian trilogy have stuff about his faith...). This album has the first Dylan song I ever heard - The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll - and it changed me.

4. John Mark McMillan - The Songs Inside the Sounds of Breaking Down - just a couple years ago
The album where How He Loves comes from. Worship music that rocks, and isn't recycled from 10 other worship songs before it. Smart songwriting, still a favorite.

5. Showbread - No Sir, Nihilism Is Not Practical
Still a Showbread fan. Josh Porter (stage name: Josh Dies), lead vocals, guitar and mastermind behind their material is one of my favorite pastors (Van City Church, Portland). This album changed what I thought punk had to be, and then when I learned more about what the band (especially Josh) believes theologically, it opened my eyes to something I always thought was there but didn't know existed. So yeah, basically they're to blame for me being open theist, pacifist and subversive to culture. More than any other band, these guys influenced me to follow my calling to be a pastor instead of continuing to run from it.

This is tougher than I thought! I left off so many favorites - Rez/Glenn/GKB, Miles Davis, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Brad Paisley, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson...

in all seriousness, and not to be flippant, I've never understood when people say that a record "changed my life forever"...

but to be a bit flippant...
I guess I'd go with Boston Self-titled as that was the first band I got into and they are my first "favorite" band way back in 1979...so because of that record, my life was changed in that it got me into music and has cost me immense amounts of money ever since...

Very Happy

“Changed Your Life” seems like such a daunting criteria.  I have had dozens of favorite albums, but many of them didn’t make any kind of real difference in my life.  Here are the ones I can remember that really impacted me (much of it secular).

1. Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance
This was the first heavy-metal album I ever got.  Before this I had been listening to ABBA, Hall & Oates, Billy Squire and Pat Benatar.  I didn’t have much of any idea what heavy metal was (other than what I had heard on the radio).  I got this cassette brand new in 1982 (way back in junior high school).  It created an instant love for heavy metal music in my young little heart and is still one of my favorite albums/bands today.

2. Queensryche – Queensryche (EP)
I saw this band live (opening for Dio) shortly after their EP was released (in 1984).  I had seen a few local bands perform, but this band just blew me away.  I had no idea such a young band could sound so amazing and be instantly accessible yet complex at the same time.  The fact that they were from my area really helped cement my love for them.  Still one of my favorite bands today.   Between 1984 and 1993 I managed to catch them live for every tour.

3. Alice in Chains – Facelift & Mother Love Bone – Apple
I had just gotten out of the Army in April of 1990, and moved back to the Seattle area.  I had become a bit disenchanted with much of hard rock and heavy metal and wasn’t even really keeping up with much of any new music anymore.  I had met the band Alice in Chains the previous summer (through a mutual friend) and watched them perform at a club.  I got their debut album “Facelift” along with another local band’s (Mother Love Bone) album “Apple” at the same time that summer of 1990.  I was instantly hooked in by their sound and found myself once again in love with music.  I would spend the next decade going to local clubs and watching dozens of local bands (most of who don’t even exist anymore).

4. Whitecross – Hammer & Nail
Back in 2005 I had recently come to Christ and as a result I got rid of 99% of the secular music in my collection (leaving me only with 5 Stryper discs, an old White Heart cassette…and the first two Giant discs).  I was starved for music, but didn’t want to listen to anything from the secular market.  I actually found this cd in my local library and picked it up thinking they might be Christian.  After listening to the album it was obviously Christian and it really rocked.  I had no idea there were any other Christian hard rock or metal bands (other than Stryper).  Finding this album sent me on an internet crusade to find other Christian bands with a similar sound, which ultimate lead me to the CMR and CHM.

Hmm, let's see.  In no particular order.

1.  Rez Band--Live Bootleg
When I first heard this album, the hardest thing I was listening to was Petra's "Judas' Kiss".  This album put me on a path to harder music.

2.  Miles Davis--Kind of Blue
When I went to college, I hated jazz.  My second-year roommate loved it.  It was this album that won me over.  Followed by John Coltrane's Giant Steps.  By the time I got to a Stan Getz Best of album, I was hooked.

3.  John Coltrane--A Love Supreme
This is just an album I keep going back to when I need to spiritually center myself.

4.  Phantom of the Opera OST
It was the summer before my senior year of high school.  I was a full metalhead by now.  I was with a group of about seven other students late on a Saturday night at an overlook at Cumberland Falls in southern Kentucky.  One of the guys--Gordon--asks if we want to listen to music.  "Sure."  So he brings out his boom box and presses play.  This starts playing.  At first, my inner headbanger went into convulsions and started getting ill.  But the more I listened, the more enrapt I became.  By the time I went back to school in the fall, I had become a musical theater junkie.

5.  Demon Hunter S/T
Ok, so this isn't really a transcendent album or anything, but I had really gotten out Christian metal after I got married.  I had other financial priorities (you know, food, shelter, diamonds), and most of the bands I was into had either broken up or drastically changed their sound, so I just dropped out.  In the early 2000s I came across an internet radio site called ChristianHardRock.net and I started listening to that.  There was a lot of crap on there, but one song that just stuck with me was "Infected" by Demon Hunter.  So I bought the album and that got me back into the scene.  So if you think about it, you guys have DH to thank for being blessed with my presence in your life.   Very Happy

Kind of Blue is an excellent MD album as is A Love Supreme which is considered Coltrane's greatest.

Demon Hunter has always had some songs that seem to catch a lot of people.  I really like them.  But I'll take Living Sacrifice over them pretty much anytime Headbang

It was 1978. My brother bought the self titled album of a new band called Van Halen. I had liked music prior to this event, but nothing like the life changing obsession I got the day he put headphones on my head and played Eruption. I was mesmerized. Rock and Hard Rock became my world.

As time went on, I moved from KISS, Ted Nugent and Fleetwood Mac to Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Thin Lizzy.... but it wasn't until a metal buddy gave me cassette rip compilation of his latest albums in '83 that I once again had a musically life changing experience. I remember sitting with my jaw dropped listening to Seek and Destroy by Metallica for the first time.

I would have another experience like that in '86 when I heard Peace Sells for the first time. Thrash was my all time favorite and I could not get enough.

Then I came to faith in '89. Everything changed for me musically. Though I still loved those previous styles, I was actively seeking music with a Christian message then (enjoying Petra, MWS, Rick Cua, etc). However, I first heard "Power and Love" on a Friday night metal radio show on KLRD 90.1 in 1991. Guardian blew me away and I realized there were believers out there who could actually JAM and rock even better than secular bands. That was life changing musically as I then sought to discover other bands with real talent and a great message.

I only found a few other bands at the time since I lived in a remote area with no Christian bookstores.. But then in the youth group that I was teaching, a young gal who knew I liked metal, gave me the second album by CRYSTAVOX (she was the niece of one the band members)... when I played it, I was again mesmerized !! The whole album was great, but the first 3 songs stunned me ! They sounded amazing ! Intelligent lyrics, gnarly sound, and very professional.

For me, those albums made the biggest impact on me.

By the time it came out, I was a hardcore thrash fan. I heard that it was a side project of Anthrax members, who I was ALL into at the time. So I picked up the album and it was love at first listen. It incorporated thrash with humor (and unfortunately some off-color subjects). I was also into punk at the time, and there are elements of punk in it. Not exactly "life changing" but we almost formed a cult around that album for the better part of that school year Laughing

1.  Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - I Love Rock In Roll.  This was my first "hard rock" album.  I loved the sultry sounds of how she mixed those big rock guitars, blues, and punk altogether.  To be honest, this is probably why I love rocked out blues so much.  This would lead me to buying my next cassette.......

2.  AC-DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.  This is what anchored my love for hard rock and metal.  I know--there is disagreement nowadays as to whether AC/DC was metal.  The metal magazines back then called them metal and that is good enough for me!  Again, it was that blues based rock sound that really drew me in.

3.  Stryper - To Hell With The Devil.  This was my first exposure to Christian music.  I was a teenage atheist based mostly on there couldn't be a God with so much pain and suffering in the world.  The suffering I cared about, though, was my own.  I was nerdy in school and still am.  I was picked on a lot despite me being as big as the football players and others who daily were chipping away at me.  I wanted to die and blaming an invisible god who didn't listen was easy.  While this album wasn't the cause for me finding Jesus, at least I was getting some gospel in me.  When I got out of secular music, this would be one of the few albums I kept.

4.  Rose - Healing.  I was in a rough place as an adult.  I was daily contemplating suicide and even had started making plans.  This album seemed to help when times got bad and I played it a ton.  The song "On My Knees" became my daily prayer until I broke through.  I wrote my own song "Deliverance" when I broke through those time.

5.  Shane Speal & The Snake Oil Band - Holler!  While nothing lyrically to praise here, I got this album shortly after I began researching my cigar box guitars.  Shane's music showed me that a 3 string guitar could be a force to be reckoned with and be cool.  This album is really what made me want to do the blues album on my own instruments.  He also showed that, just because you are playing recycled junk, your sound can be as big or small as you want.  It is all about the attitude and talent that will make people listen.

1. Kiss - Double Platinum.  This was my first hard rock album, purchased in the summer of 78 as a teenager.  Literally wore the grooves off it. Of course, one thing leads to another and I soon acquired albums from Van Halen, Ted Nugent, etc not to mention every Kiss album released up to that point.

2. Resurrection Band -Awaiting Your Reply.  I came to the faith in early 1979 but did not discover Christian music until the fall of 1980, with my first exposure being a Second Chapter of Acts concert.  Yes, I liked SCOA but being a rocker I wished for something a bit heavier.  Enter Resurrection Band.  A friend loaned me a cassette copy of Rainbows End and was blown with the joining of hard rock and psychedelic influences (still love the album to this day).  I ventured to the local Christian supply, and while I did not find Rainbow's End on the shelf, I did pick up Awaiting Your Reply, officially my first Christian hard music purchase, which would lead to a lot more, including the other Rez Band albums released at the time alongside those by Jerusalem, Petra, Barnabas, Daniel Band and others.

3.  Kerry Livgren - Seeds Of Change.  This was the fall of 1981, and I had just finished reading Livgren's autobiography of the same name and was on a mission to locate a copy of his recently released solo album Seeds Of Change.  Found it at of all places a K-Mart in Walla Walla, Washington.  This started a love affair with progressive music that has lasted to this day.

4. Stryper - The Yellow & Black Attack.  This was another one of those blow you away on first listen type experiences.  First read about Stryper in an old Campus Life magazine and immediately pre-ordered TYABA at a local independent music store (drove the owner nuts with my repeated calls inquiring as to the albums release).  I recall one summer afternoon receiving a call back at home- it was the music shop owner: "that Stryper album you have been crying about is finally in".

TYABA features some of my favorite all time Stryper songs, and still wish the original mix had been released on CD.  Also surprised the group did not turn it into a full length album by also including tracks such as "King Of Kings" and "Marching Into Battle", which they would later record on follow up albums.

In terms of legacy, TYABA let loose the flood gates in that a literal tsunami of 'white metal' bands followed in Stryper's wake (too numerous to mention).

5. Holy Soldier - Holy Soldier.  Please see the 95% review I recently wrote: the eighties metal scene allowed us to experience a lot of great music but was also a bit spotty at times in terms of packaging, production and musical consistency.  Enter the Holy Soldier debut, which literally took the scene to the next level with its all around professionalism.

It also set the precedent for an early to mid-nineties Christian hard music scene that saw some of its finest releases ever in that definitive works were put out by Deliverance (Weapons..., Learn), Bride (Snakes...), Ken Tamplin (self-titled 'green' album and his Magdallen project) and Guardian (Fire & Love).  The period also produced some great new bands in Novella, Red Sea, Fear Not and Veni Domine.

6. Veni Domine - Material Sanctuary.  Speaking of which, this remains my all time favorite album to this day, narrowly edging out the previously noted Seeds Of Change (by a hairs width!).  Did I mention I have a love affair with progressive music?  Deeply rooted orchestration, operatic vocals, intricate if not complex but accessible songwriting, Material Sanctuary presents with the total package.

7.  Theocracy - Theocracy.  A musical dark ages took over starting in the mid-nineties and lasted up to the early turn of the century period.  This all changed in 2003, which (in my opinion) saw the hard music scene start to rebound in that not only Stryper reformed but potential career defining albums were released from Rob Rock (Eyes Of Eternity), Narnia (The Great Fall) and Theocracy.  Yes, I could easily have gone with Rob Rock or Narnia in the seventh position but went with Theocracy due to unveiling an epic melodic power metal sound not previously heard within Christian circles.  And it was done to detail, with huge choir vocals, even huger melodies and an understated progressiveness that certainly turned this progressive aficionado's head.

Yes, Theocracy has released better albums (can you say As The World Bleeds or even Ghost Ship?) but I had to choose the self-titled debut in that the three epics in excess of ten minutes rate with my favorites from the group.  Yes, Theocracy was a one man band project and featured programmed drums along with some slight production issues, but this was all rectified with the Ulterium re-issue which was re-mixed, re-mastered and partially re-recorded with a live drummer.

1. Daniel Band - On Rock and Straight Ahead. My dad kept playing these two on tape in the car, one album on each side of the tape, and I fell in love with the guitars and the soaring vocals. As I grew, I began to appreciate the simplicity and depth of the lyrics. As I was looking for this on CD online, I inevitably found Retroactive Records' store, which had samples of all RAR's other albums of the early 2010s. That opened the floodgates to…

2. Titanic - Maiden Voyage and Screaming In Silence. I found these on the RAR website, and was hooked by how heavy and yet not brutal the music was. Again, I was sold on the guitars and the vocals, and also the drums. Even though the lyrics weren't overtly Christian, I was still happy at finding a good Christian band. As I got into more of Bill Menchen's music, I discovered…

3. Menchen - Red Rock. The album that got me into playing bass, I think. Prior to hearing this album, I never understood the point of bass, it just seemed like it was there. And then I heard the growling underneath the music, and I heard the soaring fills. I was amazed at all the potential that was contained in the bass, and saddened by how few players actually opened up the possibilities beyond riffing on one note or blindly copying the guitar. My search for albums with good bass and my dad's taste in music brought me to…

4. Rush - Hemispheres (although any of the early albums will do). Need I say more? Geddy Lee's screaming, the unctuous Rickenbacker, the impressive songwriting, the sheer '70s of it, and Canada. My bass playing, and most of my musical taste, revolves around Rush, amongst others. It's also one of the albums and bands that got me to having common tastes with friends, as virtually no one knows the other albums and bands I've named here, but saying "Rush" immediately brings up an opinion. (Sadly, some hate them…) I kept searching for more good Christian bands and more good progressive bands, which is where my list sort of bifurcates…

5a. Mastedon - It's A Jungle Out There! At one point, our very own Guilty/Forgiven gave away some tapes, which I obtained from him. It contained a few alright albums, and it contained Mastedon. I couldn't put it away. From the plodding heaviness of Love Inhalation and Get Up, to the peace in Islands In The Sky and Love That Will Survive, to the joy in Glorybound and This Is The Day, I was hooked. The vocals and lyrics got me as well, again in the simplicity and depth thereof. It goes down for me as one of the best albums, as a whole, recorded. Of course, this is on the opposite end of the spectrum of…

5b. Nash The Slash - Children Of The Night and FM - Black Noise. Ok, so they're two different albums, but they are progressive and indie genius, if you ask me. Nash's lyrical themes can be dark at times, so I don't enjoy the whole of his album, but the music is amazing. The amount of sound that can be generated from 2 or 3 people live, especially without a guitar, is astounding. For those who don't know either album, Nash the Slash was a solo artist performed '70s-'80s electronic music, using drum machines and analog synthesizers along with violin and mandolin (often with distortion). FM was a band in which Nash performed, alongside a drummer and keyboardist-vocalist. Currently, I'm inspired by the styles played and the creativity required to fill out so much space. (Neither album is Christian, so be wary, but if you can enjoy straight up music, then you will be blown away.)
