Operation Christmas Child Empty
PostSubject: Operation Christmas Child   Operation Christmas Child I_icon_minitimeTue Nov 07, 2017 4:10 pm

Have any of you ever packed one of the shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child?  It is an organization started by Franklin Graham that delivers shoeboxes of toys, school supplies, and some personal items to children around the globe.  With these boxes, the kids also have the opportunity to sign up for a 12 week course to teach them about following Jesus.

If you are interested in finding out more, you can go to www.samaritanspurse.org to find out what to put in a box and what to do with it when you are done.  Collection of the boxes happens next week, so that doesn't give you a lot of time to get them done.  Send a kid somewhere who really knows poverty a box of sunshine and give them a change to hear the gospel possibly for the first time ever.  We are sending 4 this year:  two for boys and two for girls.  We didn't do it last year, but we are making sure that we do so this year.

We did it several years in a row (at our old church).  It was a lot of fun.
In the past few years we have been selecting disadvantaged kids (and sometimes whole families) from our local giving tree and getting them stuff.  One year I got a really good Christmas bonus and were able to buy a bmx style bike and helmet for a local kid in need.  It's a great feeling.

My mom is a volunteer organizer for OCC.  I've packed a fair few boxes.  Sending gifts to kids is great and all, but I think the highest value of OCC is in its sharing of the Gospel all across the world.  Everything I know of it is very positive!

That is the extra benefit of packing a shoebox.  Sending the toys and gifts to these kids is great.  But, knowing that they will hear the gospel upon receiving these boxes is astounding!  That little tub of trinkets puts you on the mission field sort of!

We have our four boxes packed and ready to go.  We meant to do them last year but time slipped away despite having around 90% of everything bought.  So, this year, we picked up a few pieces we felt we needed (hats & gloves, socks, small baby dolls for the girls) and packed yesterday.  Now we actually, for probably the first time ever for anything, have to wait for the collection dates to begin rather than rushing to meet the deadlines.

You can just print out a label for boys or girls from the Samaritan's Purse website.  However, you can do a few things to personalize your box.  You can put a letter in the box for the kids.  You can put your own photo in there as well so they can see who the box is from.  Lastly, you can prepay the shipping for Operation Christmas Child ($9) and you can later track your box to what country they went to.  They will put up videos from some of the drop sites in that country and a few success stories.  While you won't know for sure what impact your box truly has, it does help to connect you to the people you served.

The youth of church has made shoebox gifts some years ago.
It's so good to make other kids happy with Christmas.

We did a shoebox drive at church this year and have 54 boxes to take to turn in.  With ours, that will make 58.  Their goal for this year is 12 MILLION boxes as they really want to push into areas where they have never gone before so that more people can hear about salvation through faith in Jesus.

I dropped off our 4 meager boxes yesterday.  I am excited to see where they go.

I dropped the boxes at a large church in Lebanon, TN.  It was so weird.  All the other times we've done this at various drop spots in the past, the churches would be well lit and there would be volunteers to greet you and show you where to take your shoe boxes.  With this church, there was NO ONE present to show you where to go.  The church was dark, and I had to walk around in this behemoth to find the drop point as it wasn't right next to an outside door.  I had only been to a funeral visitation at this church prior to this, so my real first impression was not great.  It was creepy being in that building with no lights on and no volunteers.  I almost didn't leave the boxes.

Do you think I should contact the church about this?  Operation Christmas Child?

I would and let them know it wasn't easy to find the drop point and that you almost left.

I believe my daughter will be doing one at church tonight and we have ours still to pack. They always drop a letter and a photo in the box but we have never heard back from anyone and even tracking the boxes we  have no idea where they ended up. We had an email that they were going to a non-Christian friendly country and that is all we heard. But it doesn't  matter, someone got them and it made a kid happy!

I messaged O.C.C. and let them know about my local drop point.  They were not happy about it and said they would take it up with the church leaders locally.
