Starting new job today!

On top of pastoring and being a teacher's assistant, I am also going to be one of our school's crossing guards.  I will be out in the cold, rain, light snow (that all happens today), and the heat.  With the church money problems, I wanted to be prepared if something bad happens.  If all goes well, it will just mean extra money coming in which is a good thing.  It will only take me from a 7.5 hour day to a 9 hour day.  But, the crossing guard pays quite a bit and will have to pay me overtime.  It should work out!

Take care man, hope things at your church turn around but this seems wise.

It is going to be 24 degrees in the morning and 17 on Wednesday here!  But, they gave me a bright yellow winter coat I will wear out there.

Nine hours is long?  Well, I used to work 12 hour shifts when I still worked for Bridgestone.  Nine isn't really that bad.

9 hours is a long shift when it starts at sparrow fart and involves kids. Kids are exhausting.

I have never heard being outside early a "sparrow's fart". 

I actually only get there at 6:50.  I am done around 3:30.

Close enough for government work!  I still get to charge them for 9.  I can't help it if we can clear out a high school of over 2,000 kids with a ton of student drivers, parent pick ups, and buses in less than an hour.  We are just that good!

Seriously, there is so much traffic in the afternoons that it takes abour 40 minutes to get them out.  School releases at 2:50 (we shifted our whole schedule half an hour later this year), and we are releasing student drivers for the first six minutes.  Then, we hold all cars and release the buses at 2:56.  From that point, we alternate releasing student drivers and parent pick ups until 3:30.

Stay safe when you have to be a crossing guard.
It's a long day and when it's cold outside it's not fun.
But it helps you a bit now your church is not doing so well.
I hope so very much that your church will do better and grow.

Gotta love government hours but then, math is oppressive.

While most shifts directing traffic is boring, we did get some excitement yesterday morning.  We had a truck catch fire and actually explode!  Luckily, no one was injured.  Sadly, no one brought marshmallows to roast over the flames that were literally shooting 7 feet in the air!  One of our vice principals put out the fire with FIVE fire extinguishers before the fire engine could arrive.

Never a dull moment in education, huh?

Wow, that's a crazy start to the job.

One very important step in your job would be for you to INSPECT your sign before you use it. You never know what might happen.

I did get a couple of parents yelling at me for not getting them out fast enough.  If you don't want to wait, then put your kid on a stinking bus!!!  If you yell, I have the right to bring the other lane up and hold you longer.

I didn't hold that lane longer, by the way.  I wanted to.  I only hold them up if a parent isn't paying attention because they are on their cell phone.  It is gonna take 40 minutes to clear out my high school just because of traffic.  Just be patient, folks, and we will all get home sometime.  At least I am getting $18 an hour to stand here (and overtime sometimes, too!

People in this country get ridiculously impatient when they are forced to wait in line.

I don't know why they are so impatient.  We get some parents and grandparents lining up to wait at 11:30.  I have no idea why as school doesn't let out until 2:50.  We don't allow the parent pick-up line to move at all until 3:00 as students must cross them to get to the student parking.  That's 3 1/2 hours to wait, and you are getting mad at the crossing guard for not letting you out the second "Baby Blue" gets in the car.  If you are that impatient, make them use the buses!

Yep, that's a scary start of this.

Man, what type of set up is it that it takes that long to clear everyone? Schools around here exit in a different area then the cars.
