I played the mandolin a 2 or 3 times in my church worship band myself. Couldn't stand the silly upside down string arrangement. If the worship leader wouldn't have tabbed out the chords for me I never would have figured it out.

I consider it a violin for guitarists. They're tuned the same way, but the mandolin can be played like a guitar. It's a decent way of learning to think in fifths instead of in fourths.
