PostSubject: Ran into some problems.....   Wed Mar 05, 2008 8:46 am

I can't really afford to have my CD mastered professionally this time. So, I am trying to do it myself with some software that I have.

While trying to EQ, adjust the overall volume levels (normalizing), and adding compression, I noticed just how big a difference some of the songs were mixed. Some of the songs just did not fit with others. So, what did I do?

I went back and remixed nearly half the CD. On a couple of songs, I have rerecorded bass tracks (again!) and even redid the vocals on a couple of tracks to fix pitch problems. So, I've been in a holding pattern while I try to get all of my sound issues fixed.

I am hoping that I am past this now and can move forward with mastering and CD production. Also, I have 4 songs that Pastor Brad over at CMR wants me to play on. Getting my project out of the way will free me up to work on other projects and do some writing for the next Mission Of One project.

$200-350

If Fundy does the inserts like we discussed (info coming soon, dude!), that is more than I will spend on having the CDs manufactured.

I've been working for hours on them. I'll be uploading a couple most of you haven't heard onto my MySpace page. Tell me what you think.

www.myspace.com/missionofone

The songs will be:

The End
Give In To Him
Are You Listening?

Sorry to hear you are having such a though time getting it to sound the way you want. But good things come to those who wait, and we will wait patiently.

I'm listening the "The End" right now and I gotta say it sounds amazing! What a cool song, it fits your voice very well.

Easier said than done. At least with buying CDs, I get what I paid for. With spending extra money for mastering, it increases the amount I have to invest in making the CDs. That means I either have to charge more to recoupe my losses, or I have to sell even more. Without a band, it is VERY hard to promote an album due to lack of being able to get out and play. Online presence can, and does, help sell a CD. But, hearing the band live is still the number one thing that fuels CD sales.

Are you saying your previous ones WERE done by pros? If so, I'd go somewhere else.

The first CD was not mastered at all. The 2nd CD was done by the same folks who master all of Retroactive Records stuff.

I guess the mastering wasn't what didn't turn me on, but the processing on your vox and for some reason I found the guitar tone a bit harsh.

Hopefully your finances will become stable again (any word from that church yet???), but don't release it w/o mastering.

I thought the master on "Show me the Way" was great. Sonically that album is leagues ahead of "Take Another Swig".
But I agree with Topshot about not releasing it until you have managed to come up with a way to master it.

I haven't heard anything from the church since January. I contacted them a couple of times then, but have not heard anything since. I am pretty sure that they decided to go a different direction and just failed to tell me. Typical.

I am going to let Sabidoo hear the songs when he comes in first of the week. I want him to hear the final mix of the songs. Then, I want him to hear the songs as I have them now through my 'self-mastering'. Then, I'll make the call as to whether to pay someone else to do this or go with the job I have done. While it might not be as good as it could be, I believe that the overall sound is pretty darn close to what I would get if I did send it to someone else.

I might even do a couple of short clips and send to a couple of you to show you what I have done.

It's sad the church never send an e-mail to tell you what they decided.

Good idea to let Sabidoo listen to what you have till now.
Two hear more than one in this case.

Ummm.....since you played drums on the project and have a pretty good ear for music. I think that another set of ears besides my own could be quite useful in telling if the sound of the songs is anywhere near radio quality.
