The thread about "Sayings that need to die" was a success...
Howabout a positive thread, a flip-side of that thread ?

Let's make up new sayings, or revive sayings from a LONG time ago, just to stir things up.  Twisted Evil

Terms like:
"That new metal band is BOSS"

"They're full of MALARKY"

Instead of saying "over there", say "over yonder"

"What in Sam-Hill are you doing ??"

I like the old made up words (or Polish words?) from MAD magazine - not sure how we'd use them in a sentence, but words like
Potrzebie and Axolotl would get people scratching their heads.

When I came to faith and began to remove foul language from my conversation, instead of a common inappropriate phrase everyone knows, I used to say
"Sunny Beaches in Florida !"

Howabout you, can you think of any funny, cool, hip, dope, gnarly, tubular words or phrases that we could popularize today ?

Fun idea for a thread!

I say "drat" a lot.  Still hasn't caught on...

My roommate made fun of me for saying, "let's mosey on over there" hahaha...  I think that's a good one.

Here in Santa Cruz we got our own lingo that's pretty unique.  A popular one I use often is if it's a long ways or something: "I dunno, it's kinda a barge to get there" or "wanna barge it to the West Side?" or the like.  "Gnarly" is used here often, as is "dude."

When I did my talk on Christian metal at my former church last summer I had a guy (who was somewhere between Melchizidek and Methuselah age-wise) come up to me afterward and ask how I got messed up in those "monkeyshines".  I like that word.  I think we should all talk more like Yosemite Sam.

I just use superlatives, like "fantastic", "beautiful", "glorious", "magnificent", etc. And when those fail me, I just go for "duuuude" or "duuUUUUDE!"

I'll sometimes adopt words or phrases I hear old timers use that are not commonly heard.  For example, years ago I heard my grandfather use the word (words?) purdnear, as in "it's purdnear time to go."  I thought it was quaint and made a point of using it, and now I use it without even thinking about it.

Another one is the phrase "a horse apiece."  it means the same thing as "six of one or half a dozen of the other", but is not really very common.  I used it in a conference call once with someone from another state, and he expressed surprise that someone not only knew what it meant but actually used it."

I also like to use the German version, "es macht nichts", meaning "it doesn't matter," but most people give me a  Shocked  look when I say that. Smile

I also use a few choice words from my French heritage… such as "aweille" (hurry up!), "ah ben là" (well then), and "maudine" (dang). Usually, those are mumbled under my breath, and not spoken out loud. Wink

Let's mosey over yonder where those young whippersnappers are hangin' around like a bunch of flea bitten varmints and acting like hooligans.  We should contact the local constabulary.

^ ha ! I actually use the phrase Hoodlums.
When we're out driving around and I see some teenagers walking around town (with their very low self image outfits and hair) I always say "there's some hoodlums probably looking for something to steal"
-My wife almost always says "Just cuz they're teenagers walking around, doesn't mean they're hoodlums" (then I laugh quietly)

If something costs a lot of money I'll say "That's a lot of Wonder Bread!"

Or I'll say easy peasy

Sometimes I say "I'm here to tell you..."

How about:

That's slicker than hog snot!

I'm as lost as last year's Easter egg.

You're about as worthless as a screen door on a submarine!

If you feel the need to threaten someone:

I'll knock both yer eyes into one and spit in the hole!  (My mom used to use that on us to get us laughing)

I tend to say "Mother of…" when I see a huge amount of something. Like the other day, I said "mother of fog" when there was a lot of fog on the road all of a sudden.

I always thought "Sunny Beaches in Florida" sounded innocent enough with just a touch of attitude to make people around you nervous...

There's another one from MAD magazine I always liked: Furshluginner - it's a great adjective.
